Security+ vs. SSCP: What I Learned Taking Both

Why I Took Both

  • I earned CompTIA Security+ while building my cybersecurity foundation.
  • I pursued ISC2 SSCP after gaining more professional exposure to audits, technical security, controls, and security operations.
  • Taking both made the difference between the exams much clearer than comparing their marketing descriptions or certification-level charts.

CompTIA Security+

  • Best for: students, early-career professionals, and people moving into cybersecurity.
  • Coverage: threats, architecture, identity, cryptography, risk, incident response, and security operations.
  • Style: broad coverage across many topics without requiring deep specialization in each one.
  • Value: establishes the vocabulary and baseline concepts that make later security work easier to understand.

ISC2 SSCP

  • Best for: people with some hands-on IT or cybersecurity experience.
  • Coverage: access controls, monitoring, incident response, cryptography, network security, systems security, and application security.
  • Style: more emphasis on applying security concepts and choosing the best operational response.
  • Difficulty: I found it meaningfully more challenging than Security+ because the questions expected more context and judgment.

How I Prepared for SSCP

  • Studied for roughly seven weeks.
  • Used my Security+ foundation to reduce review time on overlapping domains.
  • Completed ISC2 self-paced training for structured coverage.
  • Used additional Mike Chapple and CISSP-level material for topics where I wanted more depth.
  • Focused on understanding why an answer was operationally correct instead of memorizing terminology.

Which One Would I Take First?

  • New to cybersecurity: Security+.
  • Already working in IT/security: Security+ is still useful, but SSCP may provide more operational value.
  • Taking both: Security+ → SSCP is the order I would recommend based on my experience.
